The one cent piece has been minted since the year 1793! The name of "penny" actually derives from the British coin of the same name, which holds a similar value and place in British currency. The very first U.S. cent was minted in 1787, it was made of copper, and this coin was known as the Fugio cent, or the Franklin cent.

When did the Lincoln wheat penny come out?

Brenner completed his design for the Lincoln Wheat Penny by August 2, 1909, and the coins were released. The obverse featured a bust of Lincoln facing right, with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above and the word “LIBERTY” behind him. The reverse depicted the words “ONE CENT” in the center, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” below.
